At Action for Change & Empowerment (A.C.E.), we believe that true disability inclusion goes beyond providing assistive devices; it requires creating the conditions for lasting independence, dignity, and opportunity.
Since 2021, A.C.E. has distributed more than 1,000 wheelchairs to children and adults living with disabilities across Nigeria. While these interventions have transformed lives, our experience has also revealed an important truth: a wheelchair alone cannot guarantee long-term mobility. Accessible infrastructure, proper beneficiary assessment, maintenance services, community support, and inclusive policies are all essential to ensuring that assistive technology continues to improve lives long after distribution.
In this policy brief, Beyond Wheelchair Distribution, we share the lessons learned from our mobility support programme and present practical recommendations for governments, donors, and development partners committed to strengthening disability-inclusive programming.
